In the framework of the SARWAVE project, Sentinel-1 Terrain Observation with Progressive Scans (TOPS) mode data is processed into cross-spectra to estimate integrated wave parameters that can then be integrated in the exiting swell tracking system originally based on wave mode only. Since North Atlantic is mostly covered by Sentinel-1 in TOPS mode (and not wave mode), this is expected to bring a step change in the swell tracking to the European shelves, North-East Atlantic, and Arctic coastlines.

Dot colour indicates the swell period from 10 s (blue) to 20 s (red) and diameter is proportional to the observed swell significant height. Source: ESA, Ifremer, OceanDataLab.
